Recommended Feeding Schedule For Your New Cavalier Puppy
Puppies usually awake around 6:30 – 7:00 am
Once awake, immediately pick them up and take them outside to go potty. Our command is “Outside go potty.” The reason I state “pick them up” in the morning, they hopefully have held their bladder and wont be able to run outdoors. It will take a little time, but they will get there.
BREAKFAST is directly when they come back inside. I would suggest giving them a ¼ to 1/2 cup of food. Please adjust the amount you find your puppy will eat at each meal. Once finished, outside go potty. Please remember every time they are successful at potty outside, make a huge deal, increase tone in voice and praise…. treat works too. Not too many treats or they will not eat their food. I use the kibble for their treat.
The puppies will then play for a while and then its quite time for them to rest. Perfect time for kennel. When we put them in the kennel, we use the command “kennel up.” Once they awaken, outside potty.
LUNCH time is anywhere from 12:00 to 1:00 pm
Follow the same routine for outside and naps.
DINNER at 5:30 to 6:00 pm same routine
BEDTIME: Puppies go to bedtime around 9:30-10:00 pm. Outside potty first and as you put them in the nighttime kennel which should be in your bedroom, we say bedtime. They may whine, cry or bark. If you know they are clean and safe, let them fuss. They will get use to it. It may take a couple of nights but if you give in then it will continue. If your puppy whines or cries after sleeping for a period of time, they are telling you they need to go potty. Please pick them up quietly and go outside potty, praise and quietly back to kennel for bedtime. Repeat same words. Please put a pair of old dirty socks in with your puppy. The puppy will smell you and ease their comfort some. Must be dirty socks.
Milt and I are here if any of you are having problems and welcome you to call either of us for any help.
I would also suggest that you discuss your feeding program with your veterinarian, to discuss portions.
POTTY TIME
Puppies have small bladders, and they play and then they potty…Rule of thumb is to take them outside every 45 minutes. You can increase the time as you find their schedule.
